Howdy! I’m Liann, the creative director here at Hatch.
My main focus in this post will be on how I got to where I am and what I enjoy doing. I hate writing these introduction posts about myself but here goes!
I’ll try keep it short and sweet.
In a Nutshell
I have always been creatively inclined my entire life. Growing up, I dabbled in music, dance, illustration, photography, crafts, pottery - basically any artistic medium I could get my hands on. Naturally, when it was time to head to university, I chose to study something that would allow me to further develop my creative side. This lead me to study a Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design at Auckland University of Technology, which gave me a solid foundation in design and design principles and also allowed me to further develop my illustration and photography skills.
Throughout high school and university, I developed a huge passion for photography - in both analogue and digital. I spent my last few years at AUT freelancing with a small photography business I set up with some friends (Zap Photography). Between the three of us, we covered a huge range of events, weddings and photoshoots, but my personal focus was on fashion and people. I have done several shoots for models, hairstylists and make up artists that have featured in a range of mediums, including Remix Magazine.
After graduating from AUT (and after half a year of travelling and freelancing), I decided to study a diploma in Digital Media at Media Design School (MDS); to learn how to apply my design knowledge to the web. This is where Hatch, well, hatched!
Honestly speaking, coding was something that I wasn’t sure I wanted to pursue - as a designer learning how to code, I initially found it to be very restrictive. But the more I learnt, the more I began to see the possibilities. I soon fell in love with the web and realised that it is actually the perfect platform for me; somewhere where I can combine all my art forms in one place.
And of course, all this eventually lead to Hatch. Like Cody said, I won’t give away too much as that will come in another post!
A Few of my Favourite Things
As I mentioned before, I have experimented across a lot of creative fields. I most recently taught myself to crochet (‘Amigurumi’) and will soon make an entire pokemon/Ghibli army. Music also became a huge part of my life - I played piano for a large chunk of my childhood and this has given me a huge appreciation for music today. I then picked up guitar in my later years and love to attend gigs/concerts/musicals.
Apart from these things, I love escaping outdoors and going on long walks or hikes to get away from everything. I spent about 4-5 years training in Taekwondo and one of my goals is to return and get my black belt (I am one belt away!). I have recently taken up pole fitness/dancing to increase flexibility and core strength and I have found that I really enjoy the physical challenge required - it’s a lot harder than I imagined! I am also a massive foodie and love trying new cafes, restaurants and bars around Auckland.
Another big passion of mine is travelling, I have been lucky enough to visit some incredible places around the world and i’m itching to see more!
Lastly, I just want to thank Cody and Jeanine (and the rest of the Hatchlings - Ben, Finn and Kirushi) for everything they have put in to Hatch. I truly feel blessed to be able to work with such amazing people and I can’t wait to learn more from you all. I’d also like to thank everyone else out there who has supported us the past year - we honestly could not have done it without you.
Stay awesome guys,
- Liann xx
