Hey, Hatchlings! I’m Tallulah, the newest team member at Hatch. Over the past few months I’ve been working here as a front-end web designer & developer, and loving the experience!
At the beginning of this year, two-thirds of my way through an Interactive Design degree at Media Design School, I took the plunge and decided to pull the plug. It wasn’t that I wasn’t enjoying myself - I’d learned so many skills, understood what it meant to be a designer, and made lots of talented and creative friends - but I felt like I was ready to start out on my own. I’d come so far, but I knew that I still had so much to learn.
Thankfully, my instincts were right. There’s nothing like hands-on experience and the grounding that a real workplace can provide you with. The practical knowledge I’ve already gained from my short time here has been invaluable, and I’m really enjoying engaging myself in the creative and innovative environment that is the Hatch office!
Why Web Design?
I’ve always been creatively inclined, and spent a lot of my time growing up immersing myself in a different creative venture each week. I experimented with photography, poetry, reading, creative writing, blogging, playing music, painting and doodling. Despite this, I’ve always seen my passion for all things creative as something reserved for side projects, and never really allowed myself to concentrate solely on creative ventures until I left school.
When I first started learning development skills, I was in a class of 2 girls and around 20 boys - and I absolutely hated it. All I was interested in was making things look pretty, and all of the technical stuff did my head in. However, it slowly grew on me as I was surrounded by it more and more at university. Eventually, I discovered a real passion for it - I fell in love with the magic of taking your own designs and having the skills to turn them into something fluid and interactive. I thrive on being able to bring a design to life, turning it into something tangible that people can interact and communicate with. Although it can be frustrating and finicky at times, seeing the end result is the most satisfying thing in the world!
When I’m not at the office, I spend a healthy portion of my time binge-watching SVU, creating more Spotify playlists than one person needs, and spending way too much money on food. I’m also fascinated by film and psychology, and I love spending my spare time visiting beaches, on road trips, out walking, reading a good book, trying new eateries, or the occasional skydive.
I chose Hatch because from day one, I immediately felt like part of the team. I think Hatch strikes the perfect balance between being a professional and reliable company with a high quality of work, while having a unique, innovative and friendly approach. I love that I’m able to be constantly learning and discovering. The energy here is pretty awesome and makes me that much more motivated to get up in the morning.
So far, I’m loving the office culture and I’m super excited to immerse myself in my new role!
Til next time,
